Frequently asked questions

Your questions answered.

General

When will you do my spring cleanup?
We do yard cleanups in the order they are booked. We encourage you to book early in the season. We can't provide a specific date due to uncertain weather, but we'll notify you a day or two before your service. You'll also receive a picture notification when we're done.
Why should I aerate the lawn?
Over time, the soil beneath your lawn becomes compacted, making it more difficult for the grass to access sufficient nutrients and water. Aeration introduces oxygen into the your lawn's deep root system. Deep roots make your lawn more resilient and better able to handle stress, like heat or dry spells. The small holes also create more surface area for healthy soil microorganisms and fertilizer to do their work.
Is it time to aerate the lawn?
If you are not sure you need aeration, take a core sample of your lawn at least four inches deep. If grass roots extend only to the first one-two inches, your soil may be compacted.
What is the best time of year to aerate the lawn in Edmonton?
The best time to aerate is between May and June, or mid-October. The cores of soil are best left on the lawn so they can be reabsorbed. Booking our spring and fall yard cleaning services will keep you on schedule!
What is power raking?
Power raking removes thatch, the dense mat of stems and roots that accumulates where your grass meets the soil. A little thatch is good for lawns, but too much will prevent water, air, and nutrients from reaching the soil beneath.
What's wrong with thatch?
Too much thatch makes your lawn less permeable to the good things you want it to absorb, like fertilizer and water. Thatch also reduces the effectiveness of pest control, and since it holds onto moisture, it can create an environment for bacteria and bugs to thrive. If it becomes more than ½ inch thick, the roots of your lawn will start to grow into the thatch instead of the soil, making it less resilient.
When should you power rake in Edmonton?
In our climate, for the type of grass typically grown here, it's best to power rake in the spring. Power raking when the grass is already growing can cause damage, so it's best to do before the growing season begins, usually up until the start of May.
How often should you power rake the lawn?
For a regular residential lawn in Edmonton, power raking once every two years is sufficient.
What is the cost of a spring yard clean up?
Our price begins at $145 for spring clean ups. As always, your final price is determined by the size of your yard and your power raking, aeration, fertilizer, and composting preferences.
When does cleanup season start and end?
Spring clean-up season starts once all the snow has melted, usually in early to mid April, and runs until the end of May.
