Frequently asked questions

Your questions answered.

General

What is adaptive mowing?
Adaptive mowing is a great way to keep your lawn happy and your cost down.
In the first half of the season when your grass is growing quickly, your crew will come by for a weekly service. Once growth slows down after July they'll come by every other week!
I only need vacation coverage. Can you do that?
You can sign up for as little as one month of service. We usually recommend booking the service to overlap your vacation with a bit of time on each side. That way you get a little break as you're preparing to go and when you're settling back in.
I'm on vacation or at work, how will I know the job was done?
You will automatically receive a notification once the work is completed, with pictures of your freshly mowed lawn.
You were here last Tuesday. Why didn't you come this Tuesday?
Unfortunately we can't mow your grass when it's soaking wet so sometimes we have to adjust your schedule around the weather. Please allow a day or two on either side of your usual service day.
Where do the grass clippings go?
Up to you! You can choose to have us leave them on the lawn as mulch, leave them to be removed by the city, or we can remove and compost them. Leaving the clippings on your lawn returns nutrients to the soil, discourages weeds, and preserves moisture–like a free fertilizer!
Can you mow my overgrown lawn?
Sure we can! Depending on the height we'll have to make multiple passes with the mower. This initial mow can take sometimes 3x or 4x longer to complete than a maintenance mow, so there is a one-time surcharge depending on just how tall it is.
My home is for sale. Can you maintain the yard until it sells?
We can! It's a good idea to keep your yard looking sharp to give potential buyers a great first impression.
Can you do my fertilizer treatments too?
Right now we only offer fertilizer treatments as part of our spring or fall clean-ups.
What's your cancellation policy?
There's no penalty for cancelling your service. Come and go as you wish, we're not trying to force you into anything. Of course some heads up is always appreciated.
I have a few properties that need lawn mowing. Do you offer a discount?
Yes, please contact our office for volume pricing!
You missed a spot!
Oops! Please send us a quick note at service@propertywerks.ca so we can come fix it.

Healthy grass

When is it time to start cutting my grass in Scarborough?
We start to see heavy growth with the rain, usually in April. This is a great time to get a spring clean-up to prepare your grass for a healthy growing season. Our residential lawn care services are in full swing by May.
What height do you recommend I have the grass cut?
Keeping the grass 3” tall allows a deeper root system to develop. This height creates shade, keeping the roots cool and not stressed. This height also allows for more moisture retention, helping to buffer the effects of severe heat or dry spells.
How often should I cut the grass?
Frequent mowing keeps your grass healthy. It's best to not remove more than 1/3 of the total height of the grass with one cut, so keeping it short keeps the ratio low. Later in the summer when the grass growth is slowing down and the weather is drier, bi-weekly mowing can be sufficient.
What can I do to keep my lawn healthy and green?
Core aeration, fertilization, mulching, regular mowing, and watering all make for a happy lawn. If you have dogs, training them to use a dedicated area to prevent burn spots from occurring is a handy trick. When you're watering, water slowly at a rate that your lawn can absorb, to avoid runoff.
How often should a lawn be aerated and when?
In Scarborough, the best time to aerate is in May to June and again in mid-October. The cores of soil are best left on the lawn so they can be reabsorbed. Booking our spring and fall yard cleaning services will keep you on schedule!
My dogs are making burn marks in the grass, what can I do?
Our furry friends have a high concentration of nitrogen in their waste, essentially acting like salt on the root systems of the grass. Some people like to train their pets to use a dedicated area for their business. Otherwise, diluting the spots with fresh water can help keep salts from accumulating.
