How much do solar panels cost in Calgary?
Most Calgary homes land between $15,000 and $25,000 installed, depending on how many panels your roof can carry. Use the calculator above to price your own roof rather than an average.
How long until solar pays for itself?
Typically 11 to 13 years at current Calgary power rates, after which the system keeps producing for the rest of its 25 year warranted life. Financed through the city's Clean Energy Improvement Program, the monthly payment and the monthly saving usually land within a few dollars of each other, so it costs you little along the way. The calculator works this out for your specific roof.
Does solar actually work in Calgary?
Yes. Calgary is one of the sunniest cities in Canada, and panels actually run more efficiently in cold weather. Production drops over the darkest winter weeks and more than makes up for it through the long summer days.

How long does an installation take?
Most residential installs are finished in one to two days on site, with permits and the utility connection adding a few weeks either side. We handle that paperwork for you.

We model your roof surface by surface, accounting for pitch, orientation, and year-round shading, then size the array against your actual power consumption rather than a generic average.

Roof & electrical check

Sort out the roof before the panels.

We confirm your roof has the remaining life and structure to carry an array for the next 25 years, and check your panel and service capacity for the inverter. Anything that needs attention is flagged before you commit.

Permits & micro-generation

The paperwork is on us.

We pull the electrical and building permits and file your micro-generation application with your wire service provider, so you can export surplus power to the grid and be credited for it.

Racking, panels & inverter

This is the part that lasts decades.

Racking is anchored to your rafters and flashed into the roof, panels are set and wired, and the inverter and disconnect are mounted and tied into your panel. Most residential arrays go up in a day or two.

Inspection & switch-on

Tidy site, system switched on.

Once inspection passes and your meter is swapped, we commission the system, walk you through the monitoring app, and clear the site completely.

Your questions answered

General

How long do solar panels last?
Panels are warranted for 25 years and typically keep producing well beyond that, losing roughly half a percent of output per year. Inverters usually need replacing once over that period.
Which way does my roof need to face?
South-facing roof surfaces produce the most, but east and west facing surfaces are still well worth covering in Calgary. Our calculator maps how much sun each part of your roof gets through the year, so you can see which surfaces earn their keep.
Do panels need clearing in Calgary winters?
Panels shed snow readily on a pitched roof and need no routine cleaning here. You'll see production dip after a heavy snowfall, then recover within a few days on its own.
How do panels hold up to hail?
Better than most roofs do. Every Tier 1 panel we install is certified to the IEC standard that fires 25 mm hailstones at the glass at around 80 km/h, and the tempered front glass shrugs off most Calgary storms. Let your insurer know once the system is running, since coverage is usually added to your existing home policy.
Will my panels work in a power outage?
Not on their own. A grid-tied system has to shut down during an outage so it can't feed power into lines crews may be working on. If you want to keep the lights on through a blackout you need a battery with backup capability, which we can quote alongside the array.
What if I sell my home before 25 years?
The array stays with the house and transfers to the new owner, along with the lower power bill that comes with it. If you financed through the city's program you can either clear the balance at closing or pass it to the buyer.
Do you install solar in my area?

Pricing

What is included in my quoted project cost?
Panels, racking, inverters, wiring, permits, inspection, and your micro-generation application are all included in your quoted price. Your quoted price is your final price, with no surprise charges mid-project.
What happens to power I do not use?
Alberta's micro-generation regulation credits you for every kilowatt-hour you send to the grid, at whatever rate your retailer plan is on. In Calgary, ENMAX's Easymax Seasonal Solar plan lets you switch to a much higher rate for the sunny months when you're exporting, then back to the standard rate over winter. You do have to switch it yourself, and the fixed delivery and administration charges on your bill stay the same either way.
Can I finance the system?
Yes. The City of Calgary's Clean Energy Improvement Program can finance up to 100% of your project to a maximum of $50,000, over as much as 20 years, repaid through your property tax bill. For most homes the monthly payment lands close to the monthly saving, so the system largely pays for itself as you go. It is a loan, not a rebate.
How do I get an estimate for my home?

Will you match another quote?
Yes. Bring us a written quote from another licensed installer for comparable equipment and we'll match it. You shouldn't have to shop around to find out whether our number is fair, and we'd rather earn the job on the work than lose it over a few hundred dollars.

Equipment and design

Does my roof need replacing first?
An array should go on a roof with at least 20 years of life left in it, since removing and reinstalling panels for a re-roof is an avoidable cost. If yours is getting on, we also handle roof replacement and can sequence the two together.
Do I need a battery?
Not for the system to work. Alberta credits your exports through micro-generation, which covers most homeowners. Batteries are worth considering if backup power during outages matters to you, and we can quote a battery-ready install.
What happens to the financing if I move?
The financing follows the property, not you. When you sell you can either clear the remaining balance with no penalty, or disclose it and hand the balance to the buyer along with the panels. You can also pay it off early at any point without a fee.
Will panels damage my roof?
Every mount is anchored to a rafter and flashed into the roof surface the same way a vent or skylight is. Done properly it doesn't compromise your roof, and the panels shelter the shingles beneath them.
Can I start small and add panels later?
Usually, as long as your inverter has capacity left and your electrical service can carry the extra. It is cheaper to size it properly the first time though, because the crew, the permits and the micro-generation application are all one-time costs. If your roof and budget allow it, stretch now rather than later.
What warranties come with the system?
Panels carry a 25 year performance warranty and inverters typically 10 to 12 years, both from the manufacturer. Our own workmanship is covered for as long as you own the array — if a mount, flashing or connection we installed fails, we come back and fix it at no charge. If a panel or inverter fails, we handle the manufacturer claim for you rather than sending you to chase it.
